Most people start using Claude Cowork the same way they started using ChatGPT: open it, paste a question, copy the answer. That works. It also leaves most of the value on the table.

Cowork is a different tool. It runs against your folders, produces real files, runs multi-step workflows, and — once you get it — collapses hours of grunt-work into minutes. This guide is the practical onboarding we wish every fund had on day one. It will evolve as the platform does.

Who this is for

Analysts, PMs, IR, operations, and compliance teams at hedge funds, family offices, and asset managers who have Claude Cowork enabled and want to actually use it. It assumes nothing technical — if you can open a folder on your computer, you can follow this guide.

How to read it

Read it in order on your first pass — each section builds on the last. After that, jump to the workflow you need. Each workflow page has a copy-paste prompt block; you can pick one up at 9 AM and have it running before the morning meeting.

Contents

  1. 01

    The Mental Model

The single line that fixes most onboarding confusion: deliverables vs. everything else.

  2. 02

    Setup in 5 Minutes

Folder, global instructions, MCP connectors, first real task.

  3. 03

    Skills — the Multiplier

When to build a Skill, and how Skills double as durable knowledge containers.

  4. 04

    Six Week-One Workflows

Earnings prep, 10-K diff, model update, LP response, month-end close, marketing review.

  5. 05

    The Long-Task Drift Trap

Why one giant Skill fails — and the 8–12 sub-Skill pattern that doesn't.

  6. 06

    Rollout Shape

What a defensible four-week rollout looks like at a hedge fund or family office.

  7. 07

    Folder Templates

Starter folder structures you can copy — basic and advanced — to get a team productive fast.
